what is a helical

pile system?…

Helical piles, also known as screw piles, are a factory-manufactured steel foundation system consisting of a central hollow shaft with one or more helix-shaped bearing plates and a bracket that allows attachment to a structure. The helix plates are commonly referred to as blades or flights and are welded to the lead section.

The terms helical piles, screw piles, helical piers, helical anchors, helix piers, and helix anchors are often used interchangeably. However, the term “pier” more often refers to a helical pile loaded in axial compression, while the term “anchor”more often refers to a helical pile loaded in axial tension. The term “pile” traditionally describes a deep foundation that canresist both tension and compression loads. Square or round extension shafts are added to increase depth to reach adequate bearing soil.

All Weather Installation

Helical piles can be installed through inclement weather and freezing temperatures.

Clean Installation

Installation of helical piles, helical tie-backs and helical soil-nails includes minimum concrete or grout, thereby minimizing equipment, vehicles and mess on the construction site.

Helical pile systems conform to green earth sustainability as not much soil is brought to the surface during installation and the small equipment used does not disturb the local neighborhood or ecosystem. Helical piles reduce the overall carbon footprint of a project in many ways.

Helical piles are typically shipped by truck from manufacturing plant to the construction site. Because helical piles are lighter in weight than other deep foundation systems, fewer truck trips are needed. Fewer truck trips mean less fuel is consumed and reduces truck traffic on the roads, which leads to less air pollution.  On many occasions, helical piles can be installed with small trucks, and equipment.  The lightweight installation equipment minimizes disturbance, making less impact on fragile ecosystems and neighborhoods.

Installed in Areas Of Limited or Tight Access

Helical piles can be installed with hand-held equipment, mini-excavators, skid steers, backhoes and larger track equipment.

Installed without Generating Spoils or Vibrations

Helical piles do not auger soils to the surface.  There are no hauling or disposal costs for evacuated dirt. See pictures of helical Pile installation below.
